Frag cultural and technical experience has gone hand in hand with continuous research, an ever-increasing expertise even when it comes to treating materials other than leather and saddle leather and valued by the creativity of international designers. The whole production processes materials with a brand new method, quality, clean shapes and attention to details. Leather and saddle leather respond to speci c demands from designers, with their own peculiar features. Tradition and innovation nd an ideal balance, necessary to combine re ned materials like leather and saddle leather with the latest design. Frag success on the market is due to the up to date shapes, contemporary suggestions and signs which mold materials and their memory and reinterpret their features, turning them into expressive potentialities. Frag offers some classics of contemporary design which t in perfectly both in the domestic warmth and the cosiness of new collective areas.
MATERIALS - The work begins with an accurate selection of the leather hides.
Then, thanks to its technical expertise, Frag turns traditional materials into a contemporary, rational product, drawing inspiration from other fields like the fashion and leather industries. Saddle leather thus plays an outstanding aesthetic and functional/ structural role. SADDLE LEATHER - What is saddle leather? What is the difference between leather and saddle leather? The word ‘saddle leather’ refers to thick leather, with an unaltered original structure, whose tanning prevents it from getting worn out. This process consists in vegetable tanning or salt tanning. The former is based on the use of natural tannins drawn from trees. This is a more traditional and eco-friendly procedure that produces natural saddle leathers, solid and durable. This peculiar tanning process highlights the typical design of each variety. Each leather has its own story, just like a chair is a unique, original item which gradually becomes a piece of our own stories, it gets old but not worn out.
Salt tanning is the most widespread tanning technique, using salts which produce very stable compounds with the reactive groups of leather. This tanning technique makes saddle leather impervious, soft, strong and exible. LEATHER - All leathers used by Frag are drawn from bovines destined for the food industry and from controlled European farms. This ensures a high quality product and a low risk of leather deterioration. Leather is thin and, differently from saddle leather, it is soft and highly elastic. It has great breathability and resistance properties and thanks to several tanning processes, it becomes water- repellent, antistatic and re-resistant. Frag leathers passed the test for the Product Environmental Balance, which certi es a low environmental impact during their treatment, and are certi ed by the Leather From Italy Full Cycle, which guarantees an all-Italian manufacturing.
WORK - Frag puts to use its long experience to choose the best leathers and mold them with mastery and class. Saddle leather, in particular, is a material that is difficult to treat because of its stiffness, is skilfully processed thanks to Frag know how, which makes it an expert in this field.
Even softer leathers, which are also proficiently processed, are seen as something more than a mere upholstery.
MANUAL SKILLS - Accurately selected natural saddle leather, in a wide range of finishings
and colours, is processed through modern productive technologies and manually completed with experience, passion and dedication to tradition, making each product unique and perfect at the same time. After being cut, it is assembled to the body and to load-bearing structures, a phase in which the work is entirely done by hand and requires special mastery, accuracy and extreme care. The edges of saddle leather products are manually dyed with water-based dyes, which do not fade and keep products solid and durable.
STITCHING - Saddle leather is sewn with special machines which are typically used for saddlery, also called “stitch markers”. The thread used us extremely resistant. The next step is the “welding”, or tying the threads, which are later cut and fixed in an end knot. The threads and water-based paints used at Frag for borders always match with the wide range of colours of off-the shelf saddle leather and leather.
Thanks to its knowledge and technological research, Frag completely fulfills all demands through three types of services: off-the-shelf products in variable quantities, custom-made versions of existing products and products especially created with clients in accordance with a bespoke working method.
TECHNOLOGY - Frag was the first brand in Europe to use an extremely advanced cutting technique. Saddle leathers are spread out on a scanning surface, an operator detects any faults while the scanner records all imperfections, which will later be removed during the following cutting stage.
During the cutting stage, the computer suggests the best possible solution, how to position each component and the product to be cut (nesting); it also analyses and compares previous data with new ones to reveal whether leather quality and performance optimisation maintain a constant high performance rate; the engineer also checks this data and decides whether to approve the result or not.
